It is our mission to give each student an equitable, diverse, and challenging educational experience through focusing on his/her needs and varied learning styles.
Curriculum
The 6th grade language arts curriculum is based upon the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, as well as the Wake County Public Schools Curriculum guide. The curriculum includes: using language to express individual perspectives in response to personal, social, cultural, and historical issues; synthesizing and using information from a variety of sources; refining the understanding and use of argument; refining critical thinking skills and creating criteria to evaluate text and multi-media; responding to various literary genres using interpretive and evaluative process; and applying conventions of grammar and language usage.
Quarterly Grading
Classwork: 35%
Homework: 15%
Labs/Quizzes: 15%
Tests/Projects: 35%
Homework
Homework is assigned daily and occasionally on the weekends. Homework is checked daily and assigned a numerical grade of 100% if completed. In the case of partial homework, a numerical grade is assigned for the percentage completed. As long as the student truly attempts the assignment, credit is granted. A zero is recorded for missing assignments.
Late work will be accepted at 70%. The assignment must be marked and labeled “LATE” and then put into the late box. In the case of an emergency, a note from a parent or guardian must be presented the day the assignment is due. In this case, the student is allowed to turn in homework one day late for full credit.
Projects
Projects are assigned periodically and count as a test grade. Guidelines are distributed with each project. Projects do count for 35% of your grade. It is important that you finish your projects on time.
Assignment Notebook and Work Missed Due to an Absence
It is the student’s responsibility to make up work missed due to an absence. If a student is absent, he/she must follow school procedures concerning attendance as stated in the student handbook. The student must check the assignment notebook the day they return from an absence. This must be done before or after class. Work assigned prior to the absence is due upon return.
The student will have the amount of time absent, plus two days to complete work assigned during the absence. Please place all makeup work in the makeup box located on the student station. You must label your work with the date that you were absent, the date you are turning in your work, the page numbers (if needed), and the name of the assignment prior to turning in your work. The items that are not labeled will not be graded. The teacher will empty out the makeup box once a week.
Student Station
Students may use any item in the student station with permission from the teacher. Students will find the homework notebook, the late bin, and the makeup box along with a variety of other items specifically designated for student use. Items not located in the student station should not be disturbed.
Agenda
Agendas are required in class. Students must write their assignments in their agendas each day, including “no homework” when homework is not assigned. If homework is finished in class, the assignment must be recorded in the agenda. Parents should check agendas nightly.
